The department collects trash from most single-family homes and buildings with three or fewer residential units. Recyclables should be put out in a recycling bin next to the trash can. Put out trash and recyclables no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before collection and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day. Hazardous waste recycling days are held twice a year, in the spring and fall. For days and collection sites, call the mayor's call center or check the Web site.

The District's only municipal trash transfer station is open to residents (those who live in single-family homes or buildings served by the Department of Public Works) and government agencies. Hours: 1-5 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. It is a collection site for residential garbage, brush and tree limbs, and bulk items such as appliances and furniture. It does not accept hazardous, liquid or infectious wastes. The transfer station does not accept waste generated from commercial operations such as stores, apartment buildings, restaurants and businesses. Those who live in buildings served by private trash collection companies should contact their licensed trash hauler. Access is provided free to District residents only. Those bringing trash to the site will be asked to provide proof of residency.
